The Origin: How Virulence Became Fuzz Kings
Before they were synonymous with 70s muscle cars, desert sun, and massive guitar fuzz, Fu Manchu started in 1985 in Southern California under the name Virulence. Grounded in hardcore punk and inspired by the heavy, aggressive sludge of Black Flag and the Melvins, the group officially rebranded as Fu Manchu in 1990.
Driven by founding guitarist and vocalist Scott Hill, the band pivoted toward ultra-fuzzy, low-end riffs that laid the groundwork for the 90s "stoner rock" revolution alongside acts like Kyuss and Monster Magnet. Their lyrics—focused on vans, muscle cars, sci-fi, and skateboarding—became the soundtrack for street sessions and backyard bowl riding across the globe.
25 Years of California Crossing
Originally dropping in 2001, California Crossing stands out as a pivotal landmark in the band's extensive catalog. Marking their seventh studio release, the album dialed into clean-cut, hard-hitting grooves and infectious hooks without sacrificing an ounce of their signature fuzz tone.
Featuring heavy hitters like "Squash That Fly" and the sun-soaked, cruising title track "California Crossing", the record captures the freedom of coasting down the highway with the volume pinned to ten. Twenty-five years later, California Crossing remains a timeless classic for skaters and heavy music enthusiasts alike.
